Rustico Foods recalls ready to eat soups

Rustico Foods, a Los Angeles, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 2,659 pounds of packaged soup products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection and outside inspection hours, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The ready to eat soups were produced from Sept. 24, 2015, through Oct. 21, 2015. The following products are subject to recall: View Labels

• 2-lb. individual plastic container of soup labeled “CHICKEN MATZO BALL.”
• 1.6-lb. individual plastic container of soup labeled “CHICKEN MATZO BALL.”
• 1.6-lb. individual plastic container of soup labeled “TURKEY CHILI WITH BEANS.”
• 1.6-lb. individual plastic container of soup labeled “CHICKEN VEGETABLE.”

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-45180” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They also bear lot codes “Lot #2662015” through “Lot #2942015” on the bottom of the container and “Best By 10/21/15” through “Best By 11/18/15” stickers on the sides of the container. These items were shipped to retail establishments in southern California.                                 

The problem was discovered when an FSIS Consumer Safety Inspector identified return products that he did not have knowledge of being produced. An FSIS Enforcement Investigations and Analysis Officer then visited the establishment and determined that the establishment also produced some products outside of their approved hours of inspection.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.  

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

SuperValu recalls four soups that possibly contain plastic

SuperValu has recalled four flavors of its soup because they possibly contain small pieces of plastic. If you have bought one of the products, do not eat or drink it. The products were only distributed in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.The products may contain small pieces of plastic.

Advice to consumers

If you have bought one of the products listed above, do not consume it. Instead, return it to the shop for a full refund.

SuperValu has recalled the affected products from customers. It has also placed point-of-sale notices in stores.No other SuperValu products are affected.

SOUP BY SOUPERB RECALLED DUE TO POSSIBLE BOTULISM

Food safety specialists from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) warn consumers not to eat any soup products made by Souperb, located at 314 North 25th Street in Richmond. These products were improperly processed, making them susceptible to contamination with Clostridium botulinum. Ingestion of botulism toxin from improperly processed jarred and canned foods may lead to serious illness and death.

Souperb has issued a voluntary recall . Although there have been no reported cases of illness associated with these products, the risk is high enough that VDACS is issuing this consumer warning.

The soups are packaged in Mason-style glass jars with screw-on metal lids and have been sold at area farmers’ markets, retail stores and the store on North 25th Street. The jars are labeled with the Souperb name and may have an associated use by or best by date. The firm was made aware of the dangers associated with selling improperly processed foods of this type and is conducting a voluntary recall to remove the soups from points of sale.

Consumers who have any of these products or any foods made with these products should discard them immediately. They should double bag the jars in plastic bags and place in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash. Those who don’t wear gloves when handling these products should wash their hands with soap and running water after handling.

Botulinum toxin is odorless and colorless. It is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The initial symptoms frequently experienced are double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids and dry or sore throat. Progressive descending paralysis, usually symmetrical, may follow. Infants with botulism appear lethargic, feed poorly, are constipated, and have a weak cry and poor muscle tone.

VDACS recommends that consumers experiencing any ill effects after consuming these products should consult their health care provider immediately.
