Recall of Batches of Jack Cuthbert’s Bakery Sliced Bread Due to Possible Presence of Metal Particles

Jack Cuthbert’s Bakery is recalling the above batches of its traditional white and brown sliced breads, as they may contain metal particles. Point-of-sale recall notices are to be displayed in shops where the implicated batches were sold, which are mainly located in Co. Cork. No other products are affected by this recall.

Sara Lee®, Kroger®, Bimbo®, Nature’s Harvest®, Great Value and L’Oven Fresh® bread recalled due to glass fragments

Bimbo Bakeries USA has initiated a voluntary regional recall of certain bread products under the Sara Lee®, Kroger®, Bimbo®, Nature’s Harvest®, Great Value and L’Oven Fresh® brands due to the possible presence of fragments of glass caused by a broken light bulb at one of its bakeries.

Recalled products are the fresh bread products listed below with Best By Date, UPC Code and Bakery Code 1658 that were bought in the states listed below. The Best By Date can be found on the lower front/top third of the bag, the Bakery Code is to the left of the Best By Date. The UPC Code can be found in the bottom right corner on the back/bottom of the bag.

The company announced the recall after receiving 3 consumer reports of small pieces of glass found on the outside of the bread. There are no reports of injury.

All recalled products are being removed from store shelves. No other products are affected.

Consumers who have purchased the product can return the product to its place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-984-0989 at any time 24 hours a day.

Reason for Recall:	These items were sold in the Spencer Price Chopper between September 12th and September 15th, and are being recalled due to the potential presence of metal shards from the mixer's dough hook. Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Japan: 1000 School Children Infected With Norovirus

HAMAMATSU—Three female workers at Hamamatsu, bakery were identified as carriers of norovirus. The bakery is suspected to have been the cause of a mass food poisoning that affected many primary schools in the city, according to the Hamamatsu city government.

The city government announced Sunday that workers at Hofuku, a company that produced bread deemed to be the cause of the norovirus outbreak, were found to be infected with the virus.

According to the announcement, the three infected workers handled the bread when they inspected it on Jan. 13, the day the affected food was produced.

Yoshinao Terada, chief of the city government’s living and health section, said at a press conference, “It is highly likely that persons with the virus took part in the production process leading to contamination of the bread.”

The city government has been conducting analyses of the feces of 23 company employees who were involved in bread production on Jan. 13. The norovirus was not detected in samples from the 13 of the 16 workers for whom analytical findings have been reported.

The company explained that the three workers from whom the viruses were detected appeared to have no issues with their health or had shown any symptoms. The company ordered the three workers to stay home from work and specialists began sterilizing the plant.

The most common symptoms  of norovirus are diarrhea, throwing up, nausea,  and stomach pain.Other symptoms include fever, headache, body aches.

If you have norovirus illness, you can feel extremely ill and throw up or have diarrhea many times a day. This can lead to dehydration, especially in young children, older adults, and people with other illnesses. Most people with norovirus illness get better within 1 to 3 days.

Symptoms of dehydration are decrease in urination, dry mouth & throat and  feeling dizzy when standing up. Children who are dehydrated may cry with few or no tears and be unusually sleepy or fussy.

Australia: White Bread was recalled Due to Contamination

Coles Supermarkets Australia Ltd recalled Coles Smart Buy White Bread 700g

. It was sold in a clear plastic bread bag with a Best Before Date: 23 November 2013 and an item No. 9300601349869 The bread may be contaminated with foreign matter. Food products containing foreign matter may cause illness or injury if consumed. 

The product was sold in New South Wales by Coles Supermarkets. Please see the attached media release for specific stores affected.

Consumers should return product to any Coles store for a full refund.

Italy Uses Twitter To announce Bread Recall.

In Milan three tourists fell ill immediately after eating a bread called German Bretzel contaminated with caustic soda and purchased by Princi, a bakery in the city center. After a few hours the government issued a recall and informed the public using twitter they urging consumers not to consume that kind of bread sold in two other bakeries in the chain. The recall was also carried in newspaper.Only 5 people became ill but none were severe. The government  continued to update the situation with other tweets in real time.

The use of twitter proved to be a very effective way to get the news of the recall out quickly and helped to keep the illness associated with the bread to a minimum.
