Smoked Salami Product Recalled Due to Temperature Abuse

 Great Lakes Smoked Meats is recalling approximately 2,863 pounds of smoked salami product, which may have experienced temperature abuse and may contain Clostridium perfringens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The smoked salami was produced on Dec. 12, 2014 through Dec. 14, 2014. The following product are subject to recall: View Labels 

• Approximately 2.25-2.3 lb. vacuum-packed sticks of “SMOKEHOUSE DELI KARPATSKAYA SMOKED COOKED SALAMI”

The product subject to recall bears the establishment number “1029 SEOH” inside the Cooperative Interstate Shipment mark of inspection. This establishment is an Ohio state-inspected plant which participates in USDA’s Cooperative Interstate Shipment (CIS) program.  Under CIS, state-inspected plants can operate as federally-inspected facilities, under specific conditions, and ship their product in interstate commerce and internationally. “Sell By” dates for the recalled product range from Mar. 16, 2015, to Mar. 19, 2015. The product was shipped to retail locations in California, New York, and Pennsylvania.

The problem was discovered by the establishment during an internal records review which showed the product had reached an unsafe temperature during the cooling process.  

Clostridium perfringens is a type of bacteria that can be found in a variety of foods, particularly meats, meat products, and gravy. Emetic toxins produced by Clostridium perfringens bacteria are characterized by intense abdominal cramps and diarrhea which begin 8-22 hours after consumption of foods containing large numbers of those Clostridium perfringens bacteria capable of producing the toxin. The illness is usually over within 24 hours but less severe symptoms may persist in some individuals for 1 or 2 weeks.

FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.

Canada: Harvest Brand Meat Products Recalled

Harvest Meats Co. Ltd. recalled the meats listed which contained unsuitable ingredients. These products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan through Hotel, Restaurants Institutions, and Retail.

Recalls Salami Products Misbranded

Bolzano Artisan Meats LLC, a Milwaukee, Wis. establishment is recalling approximately 5,723 pounds of salami products for misbranding and because they were produced without the benefit of federal inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. 

 Products produced under the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (WDATCP) inspection program are eligible for sale within the state of Wisconsin when they bear the Wisconsin state inspection shield on the immediate package.  The products being recalled, however, incorrectly bear the Cooperative Interstate Shipment (CIS) program version of the USDA Mark of Inspection, which requires federal acceptance into the program.  Because the establishment is not part of the CIS program, products they produced and distributed bearing the CIS program version of the USDA Mark of Inspection cannot be sold through interstate commerce.

The products subject to recall were produced between Sept. 20, 2013 and March 15, 2014, include batch numbers 1208 to 1214, and bear the CIS program version of USDA Mark of Inspection with the establishment number “EST. 692SEWI.” Cases containing the products subject to recall may bear the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (WDATCP) inspection label, but the individual product packages may be misbranded with the CIS program version of the USDA Mark of Inspection.  Products bearing the Wisconsin state inspection shield on the immediate package are not subject to this recall.  The recalled products were distributed for institutional and retail sales nationwide as well as sold over the internet.  

The problem was discovered by FSIS personnel after receiving information about the product being in commerce.  The company began using new packaging labels with the CIS program USDA Mark of Inspection before implementing all federal requirements that would authorize use of the USDA Mark of Inspection through the CIS program.  Wisconsin state inspection personnel were not aware of the application of labels, and have been assisting FSIS in the investigation of this issue.

Various Meat Products Recalled Without Import Inspection

Santa Maria Foods Corporation, a Rexdale, Ontario, Canada establishment, is recalling approximately 8,895 pounds of various meat products, because they were imported without the benefit of full USDA inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Without full inspection, a remote possibility of adverse health consequences exists.

• 5.1-lbs. “MASTRO Milano Salami” bearing package code “2014JN17”
• 5.3-lbs. “MASTRO Calabrese Salami Hot” bearing package code “2014JL08” or “2014JN17”
• 8.4-lbs. “MASTRO Sopressata Round” bearing package code “2014JL22”
• 2.6-lbs. “MASTRO Sopressata Salami” bearing package code “2014JL09”
• 13.3-lbs. “MASTRO Mortadella with Pistachios” bearing package code “2014AL09”
• 15.0-lbs. “MASTRO Jambon de Paris Cooked Ham Jambon Cuit” bearing package code “2014AL05,” “2014AL10,” “2014AL10,” “2014AL10” or “2014AL22”

Packages will bear the Canadian establishment number “340” or “224.” The products were distributed into commerce in Arizona, California and Florida. The products were also exported by the US distributor to Australia, Tahiti, New Zealand, Fiji and Thailand.

The problem was discovered when FSIS import staff reviewed records and discovered that the product was not presented by the independent third party carrier for USDA inspection at the U.S. – Canadian border.

Salami Logs Recalled

Ferrarini USA, Importer of Record in San Fernando, Calif., is recalling approximately 15,118 pounds of salami products that were not presented for import reinspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Import reinspection by FSIS is required before an imported product is eligible to enter commerce.

Each box bears the code “IT G4279 CE” inside the Italian mark of inspection, though individual logs may not. The products were shipped to distributors in Arizona and California for further distribution to retailers.

FSIS import inspection staff and the import house discovered the problem when the shipment was not presented for reinspection as scheduled.
