Ireland; Cooked Irish Mussel Meats recalled

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today advises that a product recall is being undertaken of specific batches of Shellfish De La Mer Ltd frozen Irish cooked mussel meats. The recall is underway due to implicated batches of this product being linked to reports of illnesses associated with diarrhetic shellfish poisoning.  The implicated mussel meats were on sale in some Dunnes Stores and Tesco Ireland outlets throughout Ireland and these retailers have confirmed that affected product has been removed from sale.  The FSAI is warning consumers who may have the product at home not to eat the affected batches.
The exact implicated batches are:
Shellfish De La Mer Ltd, Cooked Mussel Meats (frozen), pack size 500g
  • Batch code: 72774/13286 – best before April 2015
  • Batch code: 72774/13349 – best before June 2015
According to Prof. Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI it is important that consumers who may have bought the implicated product, check their freezers and throw out any implicated product they may have.
“Consumers who have affected product in their freezer are advised to dispose of it or alternatively return it to the store they purchased it from.  We are strongly advising consumers not to eat the affected product.  Eating contaminated mussels could cause diarrhetic shellfish poisoning.  Symptoms are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain which can start between 30 minutes to a few hours after ingestion. Complete recovery occurs within a number of days.  Consumers who may have already consumed this product and are feeling unwell, should seek medical advice,” he said.

Yauk’s Specialty Meats Recalls Additional Meat Products

Yauk’s Specialty Meats, a Windsor, Colo., establishment, is expanding its recall to include an undetermined amount of various meat and poultry products that were produced under insanitary conditions, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The products being recalled today are in addition to the approximately 90,000 pounds of various meat and poultry products that were recalled on Dec. 9, 2013 and carry different brand names.
Products subject to this recall and expansion may be identified by the following brand names and bear the establishment number “Est. 20309” or “P-20309” inside the USDA Mark of Inspection. Products that do not bear the establishment number “Est. 20309” or “P-20309” inside the USDA Mark of Inspection would not be included in this recall.
Products subject to the recall expansion include various meat and/or poultry products from the following brands:
  • Four Sisters Farm
  • Heart Rock Bison
  • High Point Bison
  • Luc’s Pizza
  • Mountain States Poultry & Meats
  • Open A Bar 2
  • Rocky Plains Quality Meats
  • Schmidt’s Bakery & Deli
  • Wag’s Livestock
  • Wayne’s Specialty Meats
  • Windsor Dairy
  • Wyoming Pure Beef
  • Yauk’s Specialty Meats
The following products are subject to the recall announced on Dec. 9:
  • “Colorado’s Best Beef” brand various fresh, smoked and shelf-stable meat products.
  • “James Ranch” brand jerky and summer sausage.
  • “Rocky Plains Meats” brand hams, bacon, raw and smoked sausage, jerky and raw poultry.
  • “Long Family Farms” brand fresh and smoked pork products (brand name has been corrected in this expansion).
  • “Horned Beef” brand jerky.
  • “Mile High Hungarian Sausage” brand fresh and smoked bacon and sausage.
All products being recalled are packaged in retail-ready packaging of various sizes. Each package bears the establishment number “Est. 20309” or “P-20309” inside the USDA Mark of Inspection. The products were produced between April 1, 2013, and Dec. 5, 2013 and can be identified by four-digit Julian dates ranging between 3091 and 3339. The products were sold at the wholesale and retail level in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
FSIS began a food safety assessment at the plant on Dec. 5, 2013, and discovered that product was being produced under insanitary conditions, including rodent activity in the production, storage and retail areas of the property. FSIS has suspended the assignment of inspectors at the establishment, and the investigation is ongoing.  It was discovered during the ongoing investigation that additional products should be removed from commerce.
FSIS and the establishment have received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
Consumers and media with questions about the recall should contact Wayne Yauk at 970-686-9080 .
