Dole Fresh Vegetables recalls spinach due to salmonella contamination

Dole Fresh Vegetables is voluntarily recalling a limited number of cases of bagged salad. The product being recalled is Dole Spinach coded A27409B & A27409A, with an Enjoy By date of October 15 and UPC 7143000976 due to a possible health risk from Salmonella. Dole Fresh Vegetables is coordinating closely with regulatory officials. No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.
The product code and Enjoy By date are in the upper right-hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode. The salads were distributed in 13 U.S. states (Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin).
No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall. This precautionary recall notification is being issued due to an isolated instance in which a sample of Dole Spinach salad yielded a positive result for Salmonella in a random sample test conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development; Laboratory Division.
Neither Baby Spinach nor any other salads, are included in the recall. Only the specific Product Codes, UPC codes and October 15, 2015 Enjoy By date identified above are included in the recall. Consumers who have any remaining product with these Product Codes should not consume it, but rather discard it. Retailers and consumers with questions may call the Dole Food Company Consumer Response Center at (800) 356-3111, which is open 8:00 am to 3:00 pm (PT) Monday - Friday.
Dole Fresh Vegetables customer service representatives are already contacting retailers and are in the process of confirming that the recalled product is being removed from the stream of commerce.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include fever and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or abnormal pain. The illness primarily impacts young children, frail and elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

Organicgirl Brand Baby Spinach recalled due to excessive Cadmium

California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith today warned consumers not to eat a specific lot of organicgirl brand baby spinach after CDPH conducted tests found unacceptable levels of cadmium.

Recent chemical analysis of this specific lot code of baby spinach determined that the product contained 1.90 parts per million of cadmium is more than ten times the average amount of cadmium found in spinach. After being notified of the elevated level of cadmium, which is a heavy metal that is naturally occurring in some soils, organicgirl Produce, LLC of Salinas, CA initiated a voluntary recall of the organicgirl brand baby spinach. The recalled product has a “USE BY SEP 13” and a lot code of B030298-001B08S.   

While there is no risk of acute illness from consumption of this level of cadmium, long-term consumption of elevated levels of cadmium such as these may result in adverse effects on the kidneys, liver, and the immune system. The source of the cadmium has not been definitively determined, however CDPH suspects that it was likely up-taken by the plant from the soil during the growing process.      

The recalled baby spinach was packaged in five ounce plastic containers with labeling applied to the top and bottom of the package. Pictures of the recalled spinach can be found here.

Consumers in possession of the recalled spinach should discard it immediately.

More Chunky Spinach Artichoke & Parmesan Dip Recalled

Due to receiving a recall notice from its organic spinach supplier because of possible Listeria monocytogenes exposure, La Terra Fina is expanding its voluntary recall to include one lot of its 10-ounce Chunky Spinach Artichoke & Parmesan Dip & Spread as outlined in the chart below. This action is being taken out of an abundance of caution due to this product having been manufactured on the same production equipment on the same day as the Organic Spinach Dip.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. The recalled products were distributed in select retailers in the Midwest, West Coast and Rocky Mountain regions.

To date, there have been no confirmed cases of illness in relation to these products. The FDA is aware that the company is undertaking this voluntary action, which is out of an abundance of caution for consumers’ well-being and safety.

Only 10 oz. products with the "best by" date below are being recalled. The "best by" date for each product can be found on the side of the container. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to discard or return to the place of purchase for a full refund. Twin City Foods immediately notified all affected customers and initiated recalls of the retail packages on March 20, 2015.

Consumers who have purchased the affected product are urged to not consume the product and immediately return the product to the store where they purchased it for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the retailer at which they purchased the affected product.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is recalling approximately 12,540 packages of Wegmans Organic Food You Feel Good About Just Picked Frozen Spinach, 12 oz.(UPC 77890-32932) due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The product was sold in the frozen food department of the company’s 85 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts between January 27 and March 21, 2015. L. monocytogenes is a bacterium that can contaminate foods and cause a mild non-invasive illness (called listerial gastroenteritis) or a severe, sometimes life-threatening, illness (called invasive listeriosis). Persons who have the greatest risk of experiencing listeriosis after consuming foods contaminated with L. monocytogenes are fetuses and neonates who are infected after the mother is exposed to L. monocytogenes during pregnancy, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems. Customers who have experienced these symptoms and are concerned should contact their physician.

No illnesses associated with this recall have been reported to date.
