Spar has recalled its ready-to-eat Chicken Bites Snack Bags because mould has been found in the product. The mould has resulted in spoilage of the product, which is therefore unfit for human consumption.

Mould does not usually cause food poisoning. However, we would advise against consuming visibly mouldy foods as some species can produce mycotoxins.

Tattoo inks and kit recalled due to life-threatening complication

A Thousand Virgins Corp. in Miami, FL is recalling all lots of tattoo Inks described below due to microbiological contamination. A Thousand Virgins grey wash inks; G1, G2 and G3, that are labeled with Lot #129, and bearing the expiration date: 1/16, revealed contamination with Mycobacterium chelonae, Microbacterium organisms, and the molds Cryptococcus albidus and members of the Penicilliumgenus.

Use of these products may cause bacterial infection and can lead to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection. The recalled products are described below:

FDA Laboratory testing has found microbial contamination in the inks. Potentially pathogenic organisms were isolated and identified by the FDA.

Walgreen is recalling Nice! Powdered Sugar Mini Donuts due to Mold

Walgreen Co. of Deerfield, IL is recalling Nice! Powdered Sugar Mini Donuts, because it has received consumer complaints alleging that mold was observed on some products. Gel-E Donut gel pillow and Squishon 2 gel cushion recalled due to potential mold contamination

Andover, MA — Children’s Medical Ventures, a Philips Healthcare business, today announced that the company has issued a recall of all Gel-E Donut gel pillow and Squishon 2 gel cushion products due to potential mold contamination of the products. This action follows a previous recall for these products announced in May 2014. Refer to the table below for a listing of recalled model numbers and quantities, which were manufactured and distributed between July 2012 and August 2014. The model number is printed directly on the product.

Customers are being asked to discontinue use and dispose of all Gel-E Donut gel pillow and Squishon 2 gel cushion products in their facility, even if mold is not visible. Following these actions, customers will be asked to return a reply form indicating that these actions have been completed. Customers will be given credit for all products scrapped.

In May 2014, Children’s Medical Ventures initiated a recall due to mold contamination of some products, which occurred during the manufacturing process. The mold types detected on the products have been identified as types which are commonly found in indoor and outdoor environments. There is potential for the mold to be transferred to patient environments once the outer pack is opened. There is the possibility of fungal infection should patients come in contact with the mold, which could be superficial or invasive and life threatening.

At the time of the initial recall, Children’s Medical Ventures implemented a process intended to reduce the presence of viable mold on the products prior to shipment. Since then, Philips has received one new report of the presence of mold on product. Because the process to eliminate the potential for mold growth has not been fully effective, the company is announcing this new recall.

The Children’s Medical Ventures Gel-E Donut gel pillow and Squishon 2 gel cushions are intended to help support an infant’s head or body in a hospital environment. The products are intended to be used in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU), and neonatal care centers.

Countries where affected devices have been shipped include the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Reunion, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and United Kingdom.

Dermatend Original and Dermatend Ultra Recalled

Solace International, Inc. is voluntarily recalling all lots of Dermatend Original and Dermatend Ultra, in all sizes and dosage form, to the distributor/wholesaler level. A mole should be removed under the supervision of a dermatologist. Dermatend is not FDA approved, thus has not been shown to be safe and effective for the uses suggested in the labeling. Using these Dermatend products instead of seeking medical attention could result in delayed diagnosis of conditions such as cancer.

Currently, the Dermatend Original and Dermatend Ultra products are used to remove moles, warts and skin tags. Dermatend Original and Dermatend Ultra are packaged in a flexible plastic tubes labeled with the product name in blue letters. All units and lots are affected by the recall.

Solace International, Inc. is notifying its distributors/wholesalers by certified letter and is arranging for the return of all recalled products. Distributors/wholesalers that have Dermatend Original and Dermatend Ultra product, which is being recalled, should return all units and cases to Solace International, Inc. Consumers who purchased Dermatend Original and Dermatend Ultra to remove moles and warts should immediately discontinue use and consult their physician.

China Finds Rot in Apples From New Zealand

Apple rot causing an export ban to China was probably due to heavy rain during harvest, says Pipfruit New Zealand technical manager Mike Butcher. He said Pacific Queen and Pacific Rose were the varieties particularly affected.

"These organisms manifest in storage and are more prevalent in extremely wet harvest periods," "It requires rain to be released from its capsule and then water running down the tree spreads it to other apples

The rot, caused by the fungus Neofabraea alba, was not a food safety risk. "China undertake a sub-sampling of each consignment and they found evidence on only a few apples, so it is not in every apple, it is not in every box," Dr Butcher said.

Pipfruit New Zealand chief executive Alan Pollard said because China took only 2 per cent of the New Zealand harvest the industry was unaffected at season-end. Shipments bound for China had been diverted.

"The rot may be a market access problem for China but not in other markets," Mr Pollard said. He said two pack houses had been identified as being the source of three shipments with the surface rot.

The Ministry for Primary Industries had a team in China and they notified New Zealand of the rotten find, he said. Talks with China about market access for next season will start in February-March.

89 People Sick After Eating Chobani Greek Yogurt

At least 89 people have reported getting sick after eating Chobani Greek yogurt manufactured in Twin Falls, the Food and Drug Administration reported. FDA spokeswoman Tamara Ward reported that some have described nausea and cramps.No link has been confirmed between the illnesses and the yogurt. However, Ward says the FDA is working with Chobani to hasten its voluntary recall.

Chobani last week told grocery stores to destroy 35 varieties of yogurt reported to have been contaminated by a mold associated with dairy products. Last Thursday, Chobani spokeswoman Amy Juaristi said 95 percent of the tainted product had been destroyed. The affected yogurt cups have the code 16-012 and expiration dates between Sept. 11 and Oct. 7.

Health officials have said the yogurt is not a public health threat, but the company said last week the "mold can act as an opportunistic pathogen for those with compromised immune systems."

Juaristi told the newspaper on Monday that the company had identified the source of the issue at the Twin Falls plant and had taken steps to prevent it from happening again. The company has not said what caused the outbreak or how it would prevent a reoccurrence.

Mold behind Chobani recall poses little threat to consumers

Randy Worobo is a professor of Food Science in Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and a leading expert on food spoilage, and microbial food safety and quality. He comments on Thursday’s announcement of a voluntary recall by Chobani of some Greek yogurt products due to reports of mold contamination.

Worobo says:

“Mucor circinelloides is a species of mold commonly associated with fruits, vegetables and dairy that has been reported to cause spoilage like swelling and bloating in yogurt. It is not considered a disease-causing food borne microorganism.

“This mold should not pose a health risk to most consumers. Very rarely, it can act as an opportunistic pathogen, but not through food and usually only for people with compromised immune systems through inhalation. The organism is regularly used for the production of natural flavor compounds that are widely used in the food industry.”

Chobani is recalling Greek Yogurt

Chobani is recalling Greek Yogurt.

The company has ceased the distribution of the product due to reports of product bloating and swelling and some claims of illness as the company continues its investigation to identify the root cause. Chobani originally thought the problem was caused by a type of mold that would cause spoilage but would not cause illness. Since people have reported getting sick they are doing further research.

The potentially affected product was distributed nationwide from its Twin Falls, Idaho facility and was delivered to consumers through retail and club stores.
