Chicken Caesar Salad Kit Recalled Due to Listeria

APPA Fine Foods, a Corona, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 92,657 pounds of fully cooked chicken Caesar salad kit products due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The salad kits were shipped nationwide to one bulk warehouse chain for retail sale in its in-store cafés. [APPA Fine Foods produced the kits used by the bulk warehouse chain.] The following products are subject to recall:

• 11oz. clear plastic containers and 6.5-lb. boxes labeled, “APPA Fine Foods/Sam’s Club Daily Chef CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD KIT” with case codes 141851, 141922, 141951, 141991, 142021, 142201 or 142131 with use by dates of 8/14/14, 8/21/14, 8/27/14, 9/1/14, 9/3/14 or 9/17/14. The kits were produced on July 4, July 11, July 14, July 18, July 21, July 25, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8, 2014.

Box labels bear the establishment number “P-21030” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development personnel informed FSIS they received two confirmed positive Lm results from retail product purchased at one of the bulk warehouse chain locations. The bulk warehouse chain then sampled intact components of the salad kits. Only the chicken came up positive with Lm.

Consumption of food contaminated with Lm can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.

Hot Mama’s Foods), announced today that as a precaution it is voluntarily recalling 304 containers (approximately 114 pounds) of Trader Joe’s Egg White Salad with Chives packaged in 6-ounce plastic containers due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes,

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled Egg White Salad with Chives was distributed to Trader Joe’s grocery stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio & Wisconsin.

The voluntary recall applies to product in a 6 ounce, plastic container with UPC # 00666695 and a SELL BY Date of JUN 10, 2014, stamped on the edge of the lid.

Lansal, Inc. has contacted the retailer and distributors instructing them to remove all affected product from sale and is working with the appropriate agencies including state Departments of Health, the Food and Drug Administration and local authorities.

Fresh Express INC. has issued a recall of a limited number of cases of 10 oz. and 6oz. Italian Salad with the already expired Use-by Date of March 26 and a Product Code of H071A11A due to a possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes. No other Fresh Express products are being recalled.

Only Fresh Express Italian Salad with the specific Product Code of H071A11A and March 26 Use-by Date is included in the recall. Consumers who have the recalled product should not eat it but rather discard it. Consumers with questions may call Fresh Express at (800) 242-5472 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it. Updated Food Recall Warning - Various shredded cheese, pasta, and salad products recalled due to Listeria These products were distributed in British Columbia.  

The food recall warning issued on March 17, 2014 has been updated to include additional product information identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) food safety investigation. The following products are being recalled because they were made from or contain shredded cheese products voluntarily recalled by Castle Cheese Inc. due to Listeria.

Dole Bagged Salad Recalled Due to Listeria

Dole Fresh Vegetables is voluntarily recalling a limited number of cases of bagged salad. The products being recalled are Dole Italian Blend (UPC 7143000819), Fresh Selections Italian Style Blend (UPC 1111091045), Little Salad Bar Italian Salad (UPC 4149811014) and Marketside Italian Style Salad (UPC 8113102780) coded A058201A or B, with Use-by date of March 12, 2014 due to a possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes. Dole Fresh Vegetables is coordinating closely with regulatory officials. No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.

The product code and Use-by date are in the upper right-hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode. The salads were distributed in 15 U.S. states (Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia) and 3 Canadian provinces (New Brunswick, Ontario & Quebec).

This precautionary recall notification is being issued due one sample of Dole Italian salad which yielded a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes in a random sample test conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Although product is 1 day past its Use-By date and it is highly unlikely that any product is still available at retail, retailers should check their inventories and store shelves to confirm that none of the product is mistakenly present or available for purchase by consumers or in warehouse inventories. Dole Fresh Vegetables customer service representatives are already contacting retailers and are in the process of confirming that the recalled product is being removed from the stream of commerce.

Whole Foods Market Recalls Ready-To-Eat Grain Salads

Whole Foods Market’s Northern California region is recalling ready-to-eat Artichoke Wheatberry Salad and Southwest SooFoo®* Salad in response to a recall issued today by Glass Onion Catering. The salads are being recalled as a preventive measure because they have the potential to be contaminated with E. coli O157:h7, a bacteria that may cause illness.

Symptoms of E. coli O157:H7 infection may include abdominal cramps and diarrhea which is often bloody. Most infected people recover within a week; however, some may develop complications that require hospitalization. Young children and the elderly are at highest risk for a potentially life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) which includes kidney failure. To date, 26 illnesses have been reported; however, none of the illnesses are linked to products specifically sold at Whole Foods Market.

Customers may have purchased the Artichoke Wheatberry Salad and Southwest SooFoo Salad from the fresh deli case, salad bar and/or in pre-packed pint or half-pint containers in the Prepared Foods department. Both products have been pulled from all venues and carry an expiration date between Nov. 9 and Nov. 13. Four PLUs are associated with these salads:

Giant Eagle Issues Press on Two Ongoing Recalls Involving Slaw and Salad Products Due to Possible Health Threat and Candy Corn Mix Due to Undeclared Allergens

The recent expansion of the Reser's Fine Foods product recall for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination has impacted select prepared foods offerings sold at Giant Eagle, Inc. locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia. As a result, Giant Eagle has implemented a voluntary recall of Diced Summer Slaw, Diced Summer Salad and several Grab and Go combo meals that may include Diced Summer Slaw.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people or those with compromised immune systems. It can also cause stillbirths and miscarriages. The Grab and Go combo meals include Barbeque Half Chicken combo, 2-Piece Dark Chicken combo, Parmesan Crusted Chicken combo and Chicken Breast and Wing combo. All affected items were sold in the prepared foods department, either behind the counter or out of the grab-and-go case with sell by dates between October 13, 2013 and October 29. All items had a three day shelf life.

Consumers may return affected product to any Giant Eagle supermarket location for a full refund. Those with questions may call Giant Eagle Customer Care at 1-800-553-2324 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

CANDY CORN MIX RECALL

Candy Corn Mix packaged for Giant Eagle by George J. Howe Company under the Candy Place brand was voluntarily recalled by Giant Eagle on September 26, 2013 due to undeclared allergens that may cause serious reactions to consumers with certain food allergies. The candy corn mix was mistakenly packaged with a trail mix that contained peanut, milk, soy and egg allergens. The product is safe for consumption for those not allergic to these allergens.

The affected product is packaged in 13 oz. clear plastic containers with the UPC code 3003406974 and a sell by date of April 8, 2014. The product was purchased by 187 customers in Giant Eagle supermarkets in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia from September 8th, 2013 to September 26.

Consumers may return affected product to any Giant Eagle supermarket location for a full refund. Those with questions may call Giant Eagle Customer Care at 1-800-553-2324 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Broccoli Salad Sold at Deli Counters Recall

Following the Reser's Fine Foods, Inc. recall where select Reser's products were recalled due to the potential of being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, Taylor Farms Tennessee, Inc. and Taylor Farms Maryland, Inc. are voluntarily recalling a limited number of products that contain Reser's recalled ingredients.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with these products. The products subject to the recall were only served at the deli counters at the respective establishments listed below and are limited to the code dates provided.

These products are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
