Reser’s Fine Foods is expanding its October 22, 2013 recall of refrigerated ready-to-eat products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. -November 3, 2013

Listeria is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and individuals with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may suffer only short term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled refrigerated ready-to-eat products were distributed nationwide and in Canada.The product is sold in retail and food service establishments. The packages will be marked with a Use-by-Date or Best By Date and followed by a plant identifier code of 20. Consumers who purchased the product may take it back to the store for a refund or discard it.

Giant Eagle Recalls Slaw, Salad, Grab & Go Meals and Candy Corn

Giant Eagle Issues Press on Two Ongoing Recalls Involving Slaw and Salad Products Due to Possible Health Threat and Candy Corn Mix Due to Undeclared Allergens

The recent expansion of the Reser's Fine Foods product recall for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination has impacted select prepared foods offerings sold at Giant Eagle, Inc. locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia. As a result, Giant Eagle has implemented a voluntary recall of Diced Summer Slaw, Diced Summer Salad and several Grab and Go combo meals that may include Diced Summer Slaw.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people or those with compromised immune systems. It can also cause stillbirths and miscarriages. The Grab and Go combo meals include Barbeque Half Chicken combo, 2-Piece Dark Chicken combo, Parmesan Crusted Chicken combo and Chicken Breast and Wing combo. All affected items were sold in the prepared foods department, either behind the counter or out of the grab-and-go case with sell by dates between October 13, 2013 and October 29. All items had a three day shelf life.

Consumers may return affected product to any Giant Eagle supermarket location for a full refund. Those with questions may call Giant Eagle Customer Care at 1-800-553-2324 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

CANDY CORN MIX RECALL

Candy Corn Mix packaged for Giant Eagle by George J. Howe Company under the Candy Place brand was voluntarily recalled by Giant Eagle on September 26, 2013 due to undeclared allergens that may cause serious reactions to consumers with certain food allergies. The candy corn mix was mistakenly packaged with a trail mix that contained peanut, milk, soy and egg allergens. The product is safe for consumption for those not allergic to these allergens.

The affected product is packaged in 13 oz. clear plastic containers with the UPC code 3003406974 and a sell by date of April 8, 2014. The product was purchased by 187 customers in Giant Eagle supermarkets in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia from September 8th, 2013 to September 26.

Consumers may return affected product to any Giant Eagle supermarket location for a full refund. Those with questions may call Giant Eagle Customer Care at 1-800-553-2324 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Reser's Fine Foods RecallsMore Products Due to Listeria

 October 28, 2013 - Reser's Fine Foods, Inc. ("Reser's") initiated a recall of select products on October 22, 2013 due to the potential of those select products being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. On October 26, 2013, Reser's expanded its initial recall to cover a broader group of products. In response to that expanded recall, Taylor Farms Florida, Inc. ("TFFL"); Taylor Farms Illinois, Inc. ("TFIL"); Taylor Farms Maryland, Inc. ("TFMD"); Taylor Farms Texas, Inc. ("TFTX"); and Taylor Farms Tennessee, Inc. ("TFTN") are voluntarily issuing a secondary recall on a limited number of deli products that contain components implicated in Reser's expanded recall. The products subject to the recall are limited to the code dates provided. These products are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The products were distributed to retailers and distributors in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The problem was discovered through microbiological testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. A traceback investigation and follow-up testing by FDA at the facility determined there was potential cross contamination of products with Listeria monocytogenes from product contact surfaces. FSIS and the company have not received reports of illnesses due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Recommendations for People At-Risk for Listeriosis:

Wash hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling raw meat and poultry for at least 20 seconds. Wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot, soapy water. Immediately clean spills. Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods. Do not eat hot dogs, luncheon meats, bologna or other deli meats unless reheated until steaming hot. Do not eat refrigerated paté, meat spreads from a meat counter or smoked seafood found in the refrigerated section of the store. Foods that don't need refrigeration, like canned tuna and canned salmon, are safe to eat. Refrigerate after opening. Do not drink raw (unpasteurized) milk and do not eat foods that have unpasteurized milk in them. Do not eat salads made in the store such as ham salad, chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad or seafood salad. Do not eat soft cheeses such as Feta, queso blanco, queso fresco, Brie, Camembert cheeses, blue-veined cheeses and Panela unless it is labeled as made with pasteurized milk. Use precooked or ready-to-eat food as soon as you can. Listeria can grow in the refrigerator. The refrigerator should be 40° F or lower and the freezer 0° F or lower. Use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature of your refrigerator.
