Risk of Norovirus from Swimming

Simple tips can help swimmers stay safe in various swimming venues.
When most people think of norovirus, they think of people marooned on a cruise ship with raging stomach and intestinal illness, unable to leave their cabins. However, an outbreak at an Oregon lake underscores that swimming can also put the public at risk of catching the ugly bug. Fortunately, following a few easy and effective steps can help maximize the health benefits of swimming while minimizing the risk of getting sick.
In honor of Healthy and Safe Swimming week, experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local and state health officials in Oregon report today on a summer 2014 outbreak that spread via swimming in a contaminated lake.
The norovirus outbreak in July 2014 linked to a lake near Portland, Oregon sickened 70 people. Those who swam in the lake were 2.3 times more likely to develop vomiting or diarrhea than those who visited the park but didn't go in the water. More than half of those who got ill were children between 4–10 years old. Experts believe the outbreak began after a swimmer infected with norovirus had diarrhea or vomited in the water and other swimmers swallowed the contaminated water. To prevent other people from getting sick, park officials closed the lake to swimmers for 10 days.
“Children are prime targets for norovirus and other germs that can live in lakes and swimming pools because they’re so much more likely to get the water in their mouths,” said Michael Beach, Ph.D, CDC’s associate director for healthy water. “Keeping germs out of the water in the first place is key to keeping everyone healthy and helping to keep the places we swim open all summer.”
Swimmers can help protect themselves, their families and friends by following a few easy and effective steps:
Keep the pee, poop, sweat, and dirt out of the water!
  • Don’t swim if you have diarrhea or have been vomiting
  • Shower before you get in the water
  • Don’t pee or poop in the water
  • Don’t swallow lake or pool water
Every hour—everyone out!
  • Take kids on bathroom breaks
  • Check diapers, and change them in a bathroom or diaper-changing area–to keep germs away from the water.

Norovirus was the second-leading cause of outbreaks in untreated recreational water, such as lakes, from 1978-2010. Norovirus can live in water for several months or possibly even years. Swimming venues that are not treated with chlorine can pose a particular risk since there are no chemicals to kill the stomach virus.   
May 18–24, 2015, marks the 11th annual Healthy and Safe Swimming Week (formerly known as Recreational Water Illness and Injury Prevention Week). This observance highlights ways in which swimmers, parents, pool owners and operators, beach managers, and public health can maximize the health benefits of water-based physical activity, while minimizing the risk of recreational water–associated illness and injury.

Prevent Recreational Water Illness and Injury

Having fun while you swim this summer means knowing how to prevent recreational water illnesses (RWIs) and injuries. Learn how to stay healthy and safe while enjoying the water!
Swimming is one of the most popular sports activities in the United States1. Although swimming is a physical activity that offers many health benefits, pools and other recreational water venues are also places where germs can be spread and injuries can happen.

Prevent Illnesses

Recreational water illnesses (RWIs) are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols of, or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, hot tubs/spas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, or oceans.
Contrary to popular belief, chlorine and other disinfectants do not kill germs instantly. While most germs are killed within minutes, Crypto (short for Cryptosporidium) can live for days. Before they are killed, these germs can cause RWIs, such as gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic, and wound infections. The most commonly reported RWI is diarrhea caused by germs such as Crypto, Giardia, Shigella, norovirus and E. coli O157:H7. Swallowing just a mouthful of water that contains these germs can make you sick.
We all share the water we swim in, and we each need to do our part to keep ourselves, our families, and our friends healthy. To help protect yourself and loved ones from germs, here are a few simple and effective steps all swimmers can take each time we swim:
Keep the poop, germs, and pee out of the water.
  • Don't swim when you have diarrhea.
  • Shower with soap before you start swimming.
    • Take a rinse shower before you get back into the water.
  • Take bathroom breaks every 60 minutes.
  • Wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers.
Check the free chlorine level and pH before getting into the water.
  • Pools: Proper chlorine (1–3 mg/L or parts per million [ppm]) and pH (7.2–7.8) levels maximize germ-killing power.
  • Hot tubs/spas: Proper disinfectant level (chlorine [2–4 parts per million or ppm]) or bromine [4–6 ppm]) and pH (7.2–7.8) maximize germ-killing power.
  • Most superstores, hardware stores, and pool-supply stores sell pool test strips.
    • Free pool test strips: Go to the Water Quality & Health Council (WQHC)'s Healthy Pools page to order and receive free test strips. (Please note that any questions regarding your order or the availability of test strips should be addressed to the WQHC,
    • Don't swallow the water you swim in.
Parents of young children should take a few extra steps:
  • Take children on bathroom breaks every 60 minutes or check diapers every 30–60 minutes.
    • Change diapers in the bathroom or diaper-changing area and not at poolside where germs can rinse into the water.

Prevent Drowning

Drowning is the leading cause of injury death among children 1–4 years old. Every day, 10 people die from drowning, and 2 of those 10 are children under the age of 15 years. Of drowning victims who survive and are treated in emergency rooms, more than half are hospitalized or transferred for further care. These individuals often experience brain damage, which can cause memory problems, learning disabilities, or permanent loss of basic functioning (or permanent vegetative state).
Keep swimmers safe in the water.
  • Make sure everyone knows how to swim.
  • Use life jackets appropriately.
  • Provide continuous, attentive supervision close to swimmers.
  • Know CPR (for older children and adults).
Prevent access to water when pool is not in use.
  • Install and maintain barriers like 4-sided fencing and weight-bearing pool covers.
  • Use locks/alarms for windows and doors.

Prevent Pool Chemical Injuries

Pool chemicals are added to the water to kill germs and maximize disinfection. However, the same pool chemicals can also injure us if they're not handled and stored safely. Preventable injuries from pool chemicals led to nearly 5,000 emergency room visits in 2012. Nearly half of these preventable injuries were in children and teenagers and more than a third of these preventable injuries occurred at a home rather than a community pool.
Residential pool owners and public pool operators can follow these simple and effective steps to prevent pool chemical injuries:
  • Read and follow directions on product labels.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment, such as goggles and masks, as directed, when handling pool chemicals.
  • Secure pool chemicals to protect people and animals.
    • Keep young children away when handling chemicals.
  • NEVER mix different pool chemicals with each other, especially chlorine products with acid.
  • Pre-dissolve pool chemicals ONLY when directed by product label.
    • Add pool chemical to water, NEVER water to any pool chemical.

Recreational Water–Associated Disease Outbreaks

Swimming is a great form of physical activity year-round, but germs can spread in the water if we don’t each do our part to promote healthy swimming. Swimmers can help keep germs out of the water by taking a pre-swim shower and not swimming when ill with diarrhea.
Aquatics staff can kill germs in the water by maintaining disinfectant levels and pH according to public health standards that are enforced by pool inspectors. Healthy swimming is important all year—even in the winter. Hot tubs/spas were linked to 18 (22 percent) outbreaks, of which seven (39 percent) occurred in February or March.
Harmful algal blooms commonly occur in freshwater bodies. They can create bad odors, they can discolor the water or accumulate as a scum on the surface of the water.
People should avoid, and animals should be kept from, and neither should drink directly from lakes and ponds that have a scum on the water. People should also observe any local water advisories.
The outbreaks most often affected people less than 20 years old. HABs tend to occur in warm bodies of water that are rich in nutrients and often produce a visible algal scum on the water. Harmful algal blooms {HABs) might generate toxins that can make humans sick and cause death among fish, birds and dogs. Ill people report a range of health effects, including neurologic symptoms (for example, confusion), diarrhea, cough, rash, and earache.
Health-care providers should consider HAB—toxin exposure as a possible cause of illness in people who have been in or alongside freshwater bodies with algal blooms. Future increases in water temperature and nutrient pollution are expected to result in an increase in the number of HABs in freshwater lakes.

Food Poisoning; Every Thing You Need To know about Vibrios

What are vibrios?
Vibrios are toxin-producing bacteria that are found naturally in water, fish and shellfish. Vibrios are usually transferred to people when they eat food or drink beverages that are contaminated. It may be rarely contacted while Swimming in salt or brackish water. There are several types of vibrios that can cause illness, including the salt-loving vibrios which mainly live in marine environments, such as V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus and V. alginolyticus, and the freshwater vibrios, such as V. cholerae.
People who are infected with disease-causing vibrios may develop foodborne illness. Foodborne illness symptoms can vary from a mild to serious illness, depending on a variety of factors.
How do people get sick?
V. parahaemolyticus live in brackish (mixed fresh and salt) water and causes a gastrointestinal illness, usually mild in healthy humans. It is found naturally in coastal waters in Canada and the United States, with higher concentrations in the summer. Most people come in contact with V. parahaemolyticus by eating raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters. People can also pass on the bacteria to others through infected stool.
Vibrio alginolyticus, V. fluvialis and V. vulnificus are also found in the coastal waters and may be acquired through the consumption of seafood which may also cause illness. V. vulnificus is fatal in half the cases when the bacteria gets into the blood stream.
People usually become infected with V. cholerae when travelling to countries in the tropical region, by eating or drinking contaminated food or drinks. V. cholerae causes cholera, an often severe gastrointestinal illness. Cholera is a disease of global concern and some strains are still spreading in various countries. Food and water can become contaminated through contact with any of the following: infected vomit, contaminated stool, unclean hands, or flies.
What are the symptoms and treatment?
People with V. parahaemolyticus usually get a mild intestinal illness. Most people develop one or more of the following symptoms 12 to 24 hours after being infected with the bacteria: diarrhea (watery), stomach, cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, headache.
In addition to the usual symptoms for V. parahaemolyticus, people with V. vulnificus, could experience chills, abnormally low blood pressure or, bacteria present in the blood. These symptoms are of greatest concern for vulnerable individuals.
The illness can last up to three days, and severe illness is rare. Treatment is rarely needed, other than to drink plenty of fluids, including fruit juice and electrolytes. People most at risk for complications are pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, young children and the elderly.
Cholera is a much more serious illness. People with V. cholerae usually develop one or more of the following symptoms one to three days after being infected: diarrhea (watery), leg cramps, vomiting, dehydration, low blood pressure.
People with cholera can experience a wide range of symptoms. Some do not get sick at all and others feel as though they have a bad case of diarrhea. Still others become seriously ill and must be hospitalized.
Cholera can last up to seven days. Because of the rapid loss of body fluids, cholera can lead to dehydration and shock. The main treatment is rehydration with fluids, particularly saline or electrolytes, either orally or through intravenous (IV) injections. In serious cases, an antibiotic is administered. Without treatment, death can occur within hours, and the death rate can reach as high as 50 percent in regions where sanitary conditions are poor. With treatment, the death rate can be reduced to about 1 percent.
Like most foodborne illnesses, people most at risk for complications are pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, young children and the elderly.
How do I avoid getting sick
Food safety tip
For shellfish in the shell, either a) boil until the shells open and continue boiling for 5 more minutes, or b) steam until the shells open and then continue cooking for 9 more minutes. Do not eat those shellfish that do not open during cooking. Boil shucked oysters at least 3 minutes, or fry them in oil for at least 10 minutes at 375°F (190°C), while keeping the pieces well separated.
Foods contaminated with Vibrio species, look, smell and taste normal. These tips will help protect you and your family from infection with Vibrio species:
  • Drink water from a safe (treated or boiled) water supply.
  • Buy shellfish from reputable suppliers.

  • Keep Shellfish and its juices away from cooked food.
  • Cook shellfish thoroughly before eating, especially oysters. Do not eat raw shellfish.
  • Cook food to a safe internal temperature and use a digital thermometer to check.
  • Eat shellfish right away after cooking and refrigerate leftovers.
  • Always keep raw and cooked shellfish separate.
  • Avoid taking antacids prior to eating oysters, or other seafood, as reduced stomach acid may favour the survival and growth of Vibrio species.
  • When travelling to developing countries, drink water from a safe (treated or boiled) source. Eat only cooked hot food. Eat only fruit that can be peeled.
  • Always wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap after using the bathroom.
  • Avoid exposing open wounds or broken skin to warm salt or brackish water, or to raw shellfish. Wear protective clothing (like gloves) when handling raw shellfish.
  • Wash your hands well with soap before handling any food. Be sure to wash your hands, cutting boards, counters, knives and other utensils after preparing raw foods.
These safe food practices will reduce your risk of getting sick from vibrios and other foodborne illnesses.

Iowa’s Law Keeps Consumers in the Dark

In Iowa the law makes it illegal for the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) to tell the public the name of a business that caused a public health threat if the is over.
In Iowa’s recent Cyclospora outbreak the public didn't know that the salad at Red Lobster and Olive Garden were infected until the FDA finally announced the results. The IDPH said nothing, The problem with this is that it doesn't give the public the knowledge to ask Red Lobster and Olive Garden if they wash their salad greens before they serve it to their customers.
The IDHP said its investigation found 50 possible sites that were distributing the bad salad mix, including 15 restaurants, 30 grocery stores and some isolated others. But all the public hears about is Red Lobster and Olive Garden.
The FDA doesn't always come to the rescue.  The Law kept the names of public  swimming pools that have been spreading the Cryptosporidium out of the press. This blocked disclosure of the names of at least 30 public and privately owned swimming pools that have failed to manage the parasite infections. This is a yearly problem and the public doesn't know which pools are doing a good job.

You Can Catch MRSA from Going Swimming in Florida



Some Florida beaches and some beaches along the west coast of the United States are infected with MRSA. Around Ft.Lauderdale, where I live, they regularly check the water for the bacterial infection. If they find harmful bacteria, they will close the beach. The ocean is not the only place you can catch MRSA. Football Players have a higher rate of MRSA infections.than the general public.They can get infected from grass burns from the artificial turf. People who spend a lot of time in crowded gyms can get infected. Other places where people can get infected are Child Care centers, nursing homes, military barracks, prisons, and hospitals,


The people most likely to get MRSA are those with weakened immune systems. Such as people with cancer, AIDS, bad cases of asthma or diabetes  Also people who are having  invasive surgery such as hip or knee replacement are at risk of having MRSA infections. People who work with animals such as Veterinarians are also in danger.


MRSA is resistant to most antibiotics. Many people have MRSA infestations in their noses. Most of these people show no symptoms sometimes for many years. Their immune systems keep the MRSA under control, but if there immune system gets weakened because of another disease the MRSA can spread to their lungs and cause bacterial pneumonia. Pneumonia is hard to treat. If a doctor treats the pneumonia with the wrong antibiotic, one that doesn't affect MRSA, the doctor has a very short time to find an antibiotic that will work.before the patient dies.


The other way MRSA  infects the body is through a scratch or a cut in the skin. If it is caught quickly it can be treated with surgery. The surgeon cuts out the infection Many times that is all the treatment necessary. But if the MRSA gets into the bloodstream it can infect internal organs, joints and bones.


MRSA  kills more Americans than AIDS and costs more than $20 billion to treat. Globally  about 53 million people are infected with MRSA each Year. Several Pharmaceutical companies are working on a vaccine for MRSA. It is difficult to develop.  So far two companies have failed in late stages of trials. Any possible vaccine is at least 10 to 15 years out.  


In the Republic of Georgia they have been able to treat MRSA with Phage Therapy. In one of their trials they had a 95%.success rate. Sense phage is unaffected by drug resistance it is more effective than antibiotics in treating MRSA. Hopefully it will be made legal in the United States soon.
