July 28 Trois Comtois, a French Company, notified the FDA that they wanted to issue a recall on their Morbier cheese for contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The FDA told them they would investigate. Trois Comtois did issue there recall but without the FDA practically no one noticed.
July 31 Whole Foods, An American Company, issued a recall on Trois Comtois Morbier cheese. At that time I reported the details on both recalls. Even though the FDA reported that the Trois Comtois Morbier cheese was sold by other retailers they didn’t let the public know all the states in which the cheese was distributed.
August 5 The FDA issued the Trois Comtois recall that they were given on July 28, eight days late.
CDC reported that nationwide, 1,651 cases of listeriosis occurring during 2009–2011. The case-fatality rate was 21%. Most cases occurred among adults aged 65 years and over but 14.% were pregnancy-associated. Twelve reported outbreaks affected 224 patients in 38 states. Five outbreak investigations implicated soft cheeses made from pasteurized milk that were likely contaminated during cheese-making . Two outbreaks were linked to raw produce.
Listeriosis is a deadly disease that should not be taken lightly Listeriosis can be passed to an unborn baby through the placenta even if the mother is not showing signs of illness. This can lead to premature delivery miscarriage, stillbirth, serious health problems for the newborn.
