Health Research: Lab tests of e-cigarettes demonstrate cellular harm ♦ Study ties insurgency phase of Iraq War to higher PTSD rates ♦ Liquid salts deliver drugs through the skin with enhanced efficacy

Lab tests of e-cigarettes demonstrate cellular harm Two types of electronic cigarettes have been tested by researchers who found that they damaged cells in ways that could lead to cancer. The damage occurred even with nicotine-free versions of the products.
Germany: Significantly fewer severely injured patients than in 2000 About 18,000 people are severely injured every year in Germany. Earlier investigations, in 2000 and 2006, estimated that more than 32,000 people sustain multiple trauma each year. The newly calculated lower number likely reflects a reduction of severe injuries caused by road traffic and occupational accidents.
Liquid salts deliver drugs through the skin with enhanced efficacy, reduced toxicity Formulating drugs as liquid salts may provide a safe and efficient strategy for topical delivery of drugs that cause skin toxicity.

Pennsylvania Dairy Recalls Raw Milk

Agriculture Department Warns Consumers to Discard Raw Milk Purchased at Northeastern Pennsylvania Dairy Consumers who purchased raw milk from Gross Family Dairy in South Sterling, Wayne County, should discard it immediately due to the risk of Listeria.
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture today said raw milk collected during required routine sampling by a commercial laboratory on December 17, 2015, tested positive for the bacteria. No illnesses have been reported as a result of the potential contamination, but if people who consumed the raw milk become ill, they should consult their physician. Symptoms of Listeriosis can appear in four days or up to three weeks after ingestion.
Gross Family Dairy sells raw milk on their farm as well as in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, at Earthlight Natural Foods, the Stroudsburg Farmers Market and the Monroe Farmers Market. It also sells raw milk at Dutch’s Market in Greentown, Pike County; Everything Natural in Clarks Summit, Lackawanna County; and at Matt’s Farm Stand in Hamlin, Wayne County. The milk is sold in half gallons and pints, and was bottled December 20, with a sell-by date of December 30.
Agriculture officials have ordered the owner to stop sale of all raw milk until further notice. Two samples taken at least 24 hours apart must test negative for pathogens before the farm can resume raw milk sales.
Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized.
Pennsylvania law allows farms to sell raw milk, but requires the farms to be permitted and inspected by the Department of Agriculture to reduce health risks associated with unpasteurized products.
When an incident of contamination is discovered, the department’s milk sanitarian works with the raw milk permit holder to educate them on where the issue occurred and how to find a solution.
Symptoms of Listeriosis are fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions can occur. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, but infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.
For more information about Listeriosis, visit www.health.pa.gov.
Any person who consumed raw milk from Gross Family Dairy and has symptoms should consult their physician, visit their local health center or call 877-PA HEALTH (714-3258).

Health Research: Space lab technology may help researchers detect early signs of cataract ♦ Blocking fat transport linked to longevity ♦ Call to regulate starvation of 'Paris thin' models

Space lab technology may help researchers detect early signs of cataract As we age, proteins in the lenses of our eyes start misbehaving: They unfold and congregate in clusters that block, scatter and distort light as it passes through the lens. A cloudy area, or cataract, forms.Scientists found that throughout our lifetime, levels of a key protein decline, and may be an early warning sign of a developing cataract. The study suggests that there is a window before cataracts develop when there may be time to intervene and prevent them.
Research links inorganic mercury exposure to damaged cell processes Inorganic mercury, which was previously thought to be a less harmful form of the toxic metal, is very damaging to key cell processes.
Blocking fat transport linked to longevity Everybody knows that a buildup of the wrong kind of fats can cause cardiovascular disease. A new study in nematode worms and mice also finds that a protein that transports fats around the body can hinder protective processes in cells and affect life span.
Call to regulate starvation of 'Paris thin' models Prohibiting runway models from participating in fashion shows or photo shoots if they are dangerously thin would go a long way toward preventing serious health problems among young women -- including anorexia nervosa and death from starvation.

Health News:.FDA Alert: Potential contamination of drug shipments from explosions in Tianjin City ♦ Tooth fillings of the future may incorporate bioactive glass

.FDA Alert: Potential contamination of drug shipments from explosions in Tianjin City . The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert December 22 to drug compounders and manufacturers claiming that drug shipments from Tianjin, China, may be contaminated with chemicals following two large explosions at Tianjin Dongjiang Port Ruihai International Logistics Co., chemical warehouse in August. The alert was issued after regulators detected hydrogen cyanide in two shipments of drugs from Tianjin Tianyao Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. which is located 18 miles from the explosion site
Tooth fillings of the future may incorporate bioactive glass A few years from now millions of people around the world might be walking around with an unusual kind of glass in their mouth, and using it every time they eat. Engineers have made some promising findings about the ability of 'bioactive' glass to help reduce the ability of bacteria to attack composite tooth fillings -- and perhaps even provide some of the minerals needed to replace those lost to tooth decay

Metformin has the potential to prevent and treat preeclampsia A commonly used drug for the treatment of diabetes, metformin, may have the potential to prevent and treat preeclampsia. Metformin has long been used to treat diabetes in both nonpregnant and pregnant patients, and is considered safe during pregnancy.
Mothers-to-be, babies benefit from group prenatal care, Group prenatal care can substantially improve health outcomes for both mothers and their infants. Women who received group -- rather than individual -- prenatal care were 33% less likely to have infants who were small for gestational age, had reduced risk for preterm delivery and low birthweight, and babies born to these women also spent fewer days in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Long-term outcomes of preventing premature menopause during chemotherapy Compared with receiving chemotherapy alone, women with breast cancer who also received the hormonal drug triptorelin to achieve ovarian suppression had a higher long-term probability of ovarian function recovery, without a statistically significant difference in pregnancy rate or disease-free survival,

Children's Health: Bones of obese children may be in trouble ♦ Child-pedestrian behaviors that lead to auto accidents '♦ Handle with care: Car seats and newborns

Handle with care: Car seats and newborns In 2013, car accidents resulted in approximately 8,500 infants requiring hospitalization or emergency department visits and 135 infant deaths. When used properly, car seats can reduce the risk of infant death and injury by 71 percent. Researchers found that most families with newborns made at least one serious error in the use and installation of their car safety seat.
Child-pedestrian behaviors that lead to auto accidents 'These results can serve as a tool to construct a hazard perception training intervention for youngsters,' Meir says. 'Moreover, the differences that emerged between the various children age groups reinforce that child pedestrians cannot be trained as a group, but rather the training needs to be adjusted to the level of experience the child has gained.'
Bones of obese children may be in trouble Obese children tend to have more muscle, but recent research on the muscle and bone relationship shows that excess body fat may compromise other functions in their bodies, such as bone growth.

Heart structural gene causes sudden cardiac death in animal model ♦ Drugging the microbiome may treat heart disease ♦ Hypertension-related visits to emergency rooms on rise in US

Heart structural gene causes sudden cardiac death in animal model The presence or absence of the CAP2 gene causes sudden cardiac death in mice. In particular, the absence of the gene interrupts the animal's ability to send electrical signals to the heart to tell it to contract, a condition called cardiac conduction disease. Since humans have the same CAP2 gene, what we learn from the mice could advance our understanding of heart disease.
Drugging the microbiome may treat heart disease A first-of-a-kind drug that interferes with the metabolic activity of gut microbes could one day treat heart disease in humans, according to a mouse study. Dietary supplementation with a compound that is naturally abundant in red wine and olive oil prevented gut microbes from turning unhealthy foods into metabolic byproducts that clog arteries
Hypertension-related visits to emergency rooms on rise in US The number and percentage of patients treated at emergency departments for hypertension are on the rise across the United States.

Biochemical clues may predict who develops Alzheimer's disease -- and who doesn't Investigators have wondered why the brains of some cognitively-intact elderly individuals have abundant pathology on autopsy or significant amyloid deposition on neuroimaging that are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers have investigated biochemical factors and identified differences in proteins from parietal cortex synapses between patients with and those without manifestation of dementia
Mental time travel: An exclusively human capacity? Are humans the only ones who are able to remember events that they had experienced and mentally time travel not only into the past but also the future? Or do animals have the same capacity? To a certain extent they do, according to three researchers who are contributing a new theoretical model to this long-standing discussion.
How the brain wakes you up A mechanism that is responsible for the rapid arousal from sleep and anesthesia in the brain has been discovered by researchers. The results of their study suggest new strategies for the medical treatment of sleep disorders and recovery of consciousness in vegetative states.
