Playground Closed Due too Chicken Manure Spill

In southwestern,, Meyersdale Borough Council members voted to temporarily close the Paul E. Fuller playground Tuesday due to high bacteria counts after a chicken manure spill.

A dump truck carrying manure flipped over and dumped on the hill above the playground Aug. 23. Water flows from the road, down the hill and into the playground during rainstorms Borough workers treated the area with lime, but say bacteria counts including salmonella haven't decreased.

Chicken manure can contain salmonella and campylobacter. Both can make a person sick. Campylobacter can cause an infectious disease called campylobacter, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Campylobacter is a stomach virus that starts two to five days after exposure and lasts about one week.
Borough workers treated the area with lime — and noticed bacteria counts had not decreased. Part of the playground was taped off, but some children continued to play in the area
