Children Sick after Playing in Contaminated Water

A backup sent raw sewage flowing into a new Traverse City splash park as children played in the park this weekend.

The backup began Saturday or Sunday, and Grand Traverse County health officials have issued a health warning to anyone who used the feature at the city’s Clinch Park on those days. the Traverse City Record-Eagle reports Tuesday.

Several people called the health department sense there children had gastrointestinal symptoms. One child developed a rash.

The city found out about the sewage overflow when a city worker saw sewage coming up from a manhole cover on Sunday The water feature’s installer, Jason Hobson of Lightning Turtle Landscape, arrived within about 20 minutes after the sewer backup was discovered. He noticed water in the reservoir was cloudy, tinted, and contained floating debris. The water did not smell because the sewage went into a 2,000 gallon tank of chlorinated water

The backup resulted from a failed pump that tripped a circuit breaker at an Open Space pump station. The tripped circuit also knocked out a pump failure alarm.. There was no backflow installed sense they were in a hurry to open the park.  Jason Hobson didn't get any permits and the park wasn't inspected before opening.

The environmental health director of the Grand Traverse County Health Department said there have been no hospitalizations because of the backup. He added that anyone who may have come into contact with the contaminated water should take a “thorough shower” and contact their doctors if they have gastrointestinal illness.
