New Type of Bird Influenza Making People Sick

Influenza A(H7N9) is one of a subgroup of influenza viruses that normally circulate among birds. Until recently, this virus had not been seen in people. However, human infections have now been detected.
The National Health and Family Planning Commission, China notified World Health Organization (WHO) of a confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus., WHO,
The patient is a 15-year-old boy reported from Jiangsu who became ill on 25 April 2013 and hospitalized on 26 April 2013. He recovered and was discharged on 2 May 2013. The results of molecular diagnostics were positive for H3N2 seasonal influenza virus and H7N9 avian influenza virus.
To date, WHO has been informed of a total of 133 laboratory-confirmed cases, including 43 deaths.. Until the source of infection has been identified and controlled, it is expected that there will be further cases of human infection with the virus.

As yet, there is limited information about the scope of the disease the virus causes and about the source of exposure. The disease is of concern because most patients have been severely ill. There is no indication thus far that it can be transmitted between people, but both animal-to-human and human-to-human routes of transmission are being actively investigated.
