Publix Recalls Green Peas Used in Deli Self-Service Salad Bar

Out of an abundance of caution, Publix Super Markets is issuing a voluntary recall for green peas available for selection from the company's 68 Deli Self-Service Salad Bars. The Deli Salad Bars are available in limited Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Publix learned from their supplier the green peas may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this voluntary recall. Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
"As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted green peas have been removed from all Deli Salad Bars,” said Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director. "Consumers who have prepared and purchased the salads made with green peas may return the product to their local store for a full refund. Publix customers with additional questions may call our Customer Care Department at 1-800-242-1227 or visit our website at www.publix.com."
